Observations: Large-cap and banking indices outperformed the mid-cap and small-cap benchmarks even as the broader market advanced, indicating that the recovery extended beyond the the NIFTY50 or BSE500. This bodes well and should give investors some level of confidence which is also reflected today in the INDIAVIX movement – moving 6.9% lower.

Bank NIFTY outperformed the NIFTY 50 in percentage terms. Though BANKNIFTY's performance was consistent with the broader recovery in financial stocks, it seems to me a little muted considering the average movement we are used to vis-à-vis NIFTY and BANKNIFTY.

Sensex, Mid-Cap and Small-Cap Market Performance

The Sensex recorded the strongest percentage gain among the five headline indices listed in this report.

The mid-cap and small-cap indices also closed higher, although their gains were slightly lower than those of the NIFTY 50 and Bank NIFTY.

India VIX Today: What story does it tell?

INDIAVIX - the volatility index was reported down (-6.94%) – showing some confidence returning to the markets. A sharp decline in India VIX together with higher market prices, could be an indication indicate that options markets were pricing in the lower near-term volatility.

Keep in mind though - VIX measures expected volatility, not market direction. Lower VIX alongside rising indices we see today is consistent with improving sentiment; we will continue to follow these numbers in the coming days.
