Even As India VIX Rises Despite NIFTY Gains on 26 October 2026, Should Investors Be Concerned?
The Indian stock market ended Monday, 26 October 2026, on a positive note. The NIFTY 50 gained 0.68% to close at 22,753.20, recovering from its intraday lows. However, India VIX which reflects the volatility expected by participants, rose with it - rising 1.78% to 17.16.
At first glance, this may seem contradictory. If the market is moving higher, why is volatility rising?
A rising index accompanied by a rising VIX does not automatically signal an impending correction. However, it does suggest that the market's recovery is taking place alongside continued uncertainty.
With crude oil prices, foreign institutional investor flows, geopolitical developments and the global earnings calendar all in focus, there are several reasons for market participants to remain cautious.
Let's look at what happened on 26 October, which stocks led the recovery, where selling continued, and what investors should watch next.
Indian Stock Market: Key Numbers on 26 October 2026
| Indicator | Closing level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| NIFTY 50 | 22,753.20 | +0.68% |
| BSE Sensex | 73,606.75 | +0.66% |
| India VIX | 17.16 | +1.78% |
| NIFTY Midcap 100 | 56,465.40 | +1.19% |
| NIFTY Smallcap 250 | 16,570.50 | +1.13% |
| NIFTY 500 | 21,608.75 | +0.85% |
Source: Reported market data for 26 October 2026. Figures should be checked against official exchange records before publication.
The NIFTY opened at 22,524.40, slipped to an intraday low of 22,387.35 and then recovered to close at 22,753.20.
The recovery from the day's lows indicates that buyers were willing to enter the market at lower levels. The gains in the midcap and smallcap indices also suggest that the positive move was not restricted to large-cap stocks.
Market breadth was constructive, with 37 NIFTY 50 constituents advancing and 13 declining. Across the NIFTY 500, 336 stocks advanced against 161 declines.
That is encouraging, but one session is not enough to conclude that the recent weakness is over. The next few sessions should provide a clearer picture of whether buying interest can sustain itself.
2. Why Is India VIX Rises Despite NIFTY Gains on 26 October 2026?
India VIX is derived from NIFTY options prices and represents the market's expectation of near-term volatility. It is often called the market's fear gauge, but that description can be misleading.
VIX does not tell us whether the market will rise or fall. It tells us how much movement the options market is pricing in.
There are four possible explanations for the divergence seen on 26 October.
First, investors may be increasing their protection against downside risk. Even when the market rises, some participants may purchase put options or hedge existing positions. Greater demand for options protection can push implied volatility higher.
Second, the recovery may be viewed as temporary. After a period of weakness, short-covering and value buying can lift the index. However, market participants may remain uncertain about whether the recovery will continue.
Third, global uncertainty has not disappeared. Crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, currency movements and upcoming central-bank decisions can influence sentiment even during a positive domestic trading session.
Fourth, derivatives positioning can influence volatility. Changes in options demand, expiry-related activity and expectations of larger price swings can affect implied volatility independently of the direction of the index.
The important point is that a green NIFTY and a rising India VIX are not necessarily contradictory. One reflects the current movement in prices; the other reflects expectations of future volatility.
Top Five NIFTY 50 Gainers on 26 October 2026
| Stock | Closing price | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dr. Reddy's Laboratories | ₹1,310.90 | +6.62% |
| JSW Steel | ₹1,260.00 | +6.28% |
| BSE | ₹3,359.00 | +3.97% |
| Adani Ports | ₹1,752.50 | +2.92% |
| Eternal | ₹325.55 | +2.57% |

What drove the leading stocks?
Dr. Reddy's Laboratories led the gainers, with the stock reportedly benefiting from better-than-expected earnings. Its performance helped support sentiment in pharmaceuticals.
JSW Steel advanced sharply following a strong quarterly earnings performance. The move was consistent with the strength seen across the metals segment.
BSE gained following a reported brokerage upgrade. The stock's performance also drew attention because of the continuing focus on exchange activity and derivatives markets.
Adani Ports moved higher, providing support from the ports and logistics segment. The sustainability of the advance will depend on subsequent price action and company-specific developments.
Eternal participated in the broader recovery, reflecting buying interest in selected consumer-facing and internet-linked businesses.
The gainers show that earnings and stock-specific developments continued to matter even as broader market uncertainty remained elevated. That is an important distinction: not every stock moves for the same reason, and a rising index does not make every stock attractive.
Top Five NIFTY 50 Losers on 26 October 2026
| Stock | Closing price | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Shriram Finance | ₹825.00 | -4.62% |
| Tata Consumer Products | ₹936.50 | -2.84% |
| Bajaj Finance | ₹918.70 | -1.10% |
| HDFC Life Insurance | ₹519.00 | -0.91% |
| HDFC Bank | ₹688.05 | -0.69% |

Shriram Finance was the weakest of the five stocks listed above, with the decline reportedly following a reduction in its annual loan-growth forecast. This highlights how management guidance can influence a stock even when the broader market is positive.
Tata Consumer Products also recorded a notable decline. Its movement should be assessed alongside company developments and the wider consumer sector rather than attributed to a specific cause without confirmation.
Bajaj Finance, HDFC Life Insurance and HDFC Bank also closed lower. Their performance is worth watching because financial stocks can have a meaningful influence on overall market sentiment.
The divergence between the gainers and losers reinforces the need to look beyond the headline index. A market can close higher while individual sectors and stocks continue to face selling pressure.
Sectoral Performance: Where Was the Buying?
| Sector | Reported change |
|---|---|
| Metals | +2.21% |
| Pharmaceuticals | +1.76% |
| Energy | +1.46% |
| Media | -0.34% |
| Banks | +0.15% |
| Financial Services | +0.21% |
Source: Reported sectoral market data for 26 October 2026.
Metals and pharmaceuticals led the advance, while banks and financial services recorded relatively modest gains.
This difference matters. Strong performance in a few sectors can support the headline index even when other parts of the market are struggling to recover.
For the next session, I would watch whether banking and financial stocks begin participating more meaningfully. A broader recovery, supported by several major sectors, would provide a stronger signal than gains concentrated in a smaller group of stocks.
FII and DII Activity: Who Supported the Market?
Reported provisional cash-market flows for 26 October were as follows:
| Investor category | Net activity |
|---|---|
| FIIs | Net selling of ₹1,462 crore |
| DIIs | Net buying of ₹2,610 crore |
Source: Reported institutional cash-market flow data. Figures should be verified against the relevant exchange disclosures.
Domestic institutional buying helped offset foreign institutional selling. This is one possible reason the market managed to recover despite continued selling pressure from overseas investors.
However, one day's institutional flows do not establish a trend. It is important to monitor whether foreign selling persists and whether domestic institutions continue to absorb that supply.
The combination of index performance, institutional flows, market breadth and India VIX will provide a more useful picture than any one indicator in isolation.
Overnight News and Upcoming Market Triggers
Several developments are relevant as investors prepare for the next trading session and the remainder of the week.
Crude oil and geopolitical developments
Crude oil remained a key variable in market sentiment, with reports placing Brent near $115.29 per barrel on Monday.
For India, higher crude prices can increase import costs and put pressure on inflation and the rupee. The impact can vary considerably across sectors.
- Potentially vulnerable: Aviation, oil marketing companies and businesses that use crude-linked raw materials.
- Potential beneficiaries: Selected upstream oil producers, depending on realised prices, costs and policy factors.
- Wider implications: Currency movements, inflation expectations and interest-rate-sensitive stocks.
The direction of crude oil prices will remain important for the domestic market.
US Federal Reserve policy
The scheduled Federal Reserve decision on 28 October is another event to watch. Markets will be looking at the policy announcement as well as the accompanying comments on inflation, economic growth and the future path of interest rates.
A more restrictive policy outlook could strengthen the dollar and put pressure on emerging-market assets. A more reassuring outlook could support risk appetite.
Indian IT services, financials, the rupee, precious metals and foreign portfolio flows may all respond to the outcome.
US technology earnings
Results from major US technology companies, including Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon, are important for global risk sentiment.
Their earnings and guidance can influence expectations around technology spending, artificial intelligence investment and global corporate growth.
For Indian IT services companies, the key questions will be whether client spending remains healthy and whether global technology budgets support future revenue growth.
Domestic corporate earnings
The ongoing earnings season remains a major driver of individual stocks. The moves in Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and JSW Steel illustrate how company results can influence share prices even when the broader market remains uncertain.
Investors should look beyond headline profit numbers and examine revenue growth, margins, management guidance, asset quality, order books and demand trends.
Pharmaceuticals, metals, banking, NBFCs, consumer businesses, automobiles and capital goods are among the segments where company-specific announcements can influence trading.
Rupee and foreign investment flows
Currency weakness can affect sectors differently. Import-intensive companies may face higher costs, while some exporters may benefit from improved rupee realisations. The actual effect depends on foreign-currency exposure, hedging and operating costs.
For the broader market, persistent foreign selling combined with elevated crude prices would be a development worth monitoring.
Derivatives expiry and positioning
Expiry-related adjustments can increase intraday price fluctuations and affect options premiums. Traders should distinguish between moves caused by derivatives positioning and those supported by sustained buying or selling in the cash market.
Expiry alone does not establish a bullish or bearish trend.
NIFTY Technical Levels to Watch
The NIFTY closed at 22,753.20, bringing the 22,800 region into focus as a near-term hurdle. The 22,400 area remains an important reference for support, with the day's low at 22,387.35.
| Level | What to watch |
|---|---|
| 23,000 | Next resistance area if the recovery sustains |
| 22,800 | Near-term hurdle |
| 22,400 | Important support area |
| 22,387.35 | Intraday low on 26 October |
These are reference levels, not guaranteed turning points.
A sustained move above 22,800, accompanied by broader participation and a moderation in India VIX, would strengthen the case for a more durable recovery.
On the other hand, a failure to hold the rebound, particularly if volatility rises further, would call for caution. A break below support would need confirmation from price action, trading activity and market breadth.
What Should Investors and Traders Watch Now?
For equity investors, the priority should be to assess whether the recovery is broadening and whether company earnings support current valuations. A single positive session should not be treated as confirmation that the market has turned.
For derivatives traders, the rise in India VIX is a reminder to reassess implied volatility, option premiums, position sizing and the risks around expiry. Higher implied volatility can make options more expensive, but it does not guarantee profits for option buyers.
In both cases, the focus should remain on evidence: index levels, market breadth, institutional flows, sector participation and incoming news.
My Take: A Recovery, but Not Yet an All-Clear Signal
Even as India VIX Rises Despite NIFTY Gains on 26 October 2026, the recovery on 26 October was encouraging. The NIFTY rebounded from its intraday low, midcaps and smallcaps participated, and metals and pharmaceuticals provided support.
But the rise in India VIX tells us that uncertainty has not disappeared. Foreign institutional selling, elevated crude prices and important global events remain part of the market's near-term risk picture.
I would therefore avoid reading too much into a single day's closing direction. What matters now is whether the NIFTY can sustain its recovery, whether more sectors participate and whether volatility begins to ease.
A rising NIFTY is a positive price signal. A rising India VIX is a reminder that the risks have not gone away. Both need to be read together.
